Reviews For Blotto

A Book For Those Who Have Ever Struggled

Blotto is an amazing cocktail (so to speak) of truth with a dash of humor and a splash of enlightenment. For example
“The journey is what really matters, more than the destination. My higher power can be anything greater and more powerful than me.  Over the years, my concept of a higher power evolves as I evolve.  My initial higher power is Michael Jordan.” ~ Liz Dubelman

Heart-Pounding

Blotto describes in heart-pounding detail the author’s roller coaster ride to addiction. Sometimes shocking, often moving, it’s a no-holds-barred witty account of one man’s descent into alcoholism and his route to recovery. Definitely worth reading for the insight it gives into the emotional landscape behind addiction - and what's it like to have a penchant for feet and do the 12 steps. ~ Pamela Williams

I read Blotto over a wet and windy weekend in London. It was a real experience of the horrible disease of alcoholism, and the true story of Pohn's journey to recovery and happiness. A tough read, but an absorbing one. ~ Paula Holmes

A Powerful Story

“Blotto” is a moving and powerful story, that provides a gut wrenching, first person view into addiction and recovery.  While some works on this topic tend to veer toward the maudlin or preachy, the author always finds the comedy even in the darkest moments. “Blotto” is as funny, as it is heart breaking, and it is ultimately inspirational, as it reminds us that its possible to find hope and a way back from “the bottom” whatever form it may take. ~ John Zuker

A fascinating memoir that had to take real guts to write. A must read for anyone who is struggling with addiction and anyone who loves someone with addiction issues. ~ Ali McCarthy

Funny and Honest

This book is a close look into one man's life and an exploration of how his painful childhood combined with his personality and genetics shaped his life's journey. There are parts that will make you laugh out loud and parts that will make you cry. it is an honest exploration and intimate reflection of one person's path through recovery. A powerful read! ~ Julie Pfeffer

Honest, Raw, Inspiring

Pohn is so honest it’s painful. He holds nothing back and by doing so pulls the reader into the maw of his dissonance. A engaging read full of humor, insight and redemption. Bravo! ~ Buzz Witherell

An Hysterical Homage To The Human Spirt...

Part Alvie Singer, part Woody ALLEN, part Noam Chomsky and part Bill Wilson. I read this book thru my tears and my laughter - all of it with joy and understanding. A true homage to the human spirit, 12 Steps and one man’s willing struggle to find meaning and personal redemption. This book is not just a bio but also a wonderfully insightful and funny journey into this man’s inner soul. ~ James P. Gibbons

Transcending the odds....

Jeff Pohn's experiences seem unreal and insurmountable. He is honest and vulnerable. This story is a roller coaster of ups and downs, of a dysfunctional family and of crazy Hollywood... yet his humor is consistent throughout the book. I laughed out loud many times as he was sharing one of his shameful stories. I enjoyed how this memoir is written in chronological short chapters/snippets of his life. It made for a quick, easy read. He wrote in a such a way I was drawn into his life and really rooting for him. I couldn't put the book down! It's wonderful how he is now able to look back and be so self-reflective. I hope others struggling with alcohol abuse will read this story and have it offer hope. It seems if Jeff Pohn was able to beat the odds (a dysfunctional family and alcoholism) and live a fulfilling and peaceful life, anyone can! ~ Jonathan D. Levy

Funny, Off-Beat Memoir

Jeff Pohn is my first cousin, a frequent collaborator and one of the people I’ve always felt closest to on this earth - Yet, until I read "BLOTTO", I had no idea of the depths of his pain, or the severity or the terrible toll of his addictions. Reading this off-beat, funny and incredibly revealing book only makes his recovery and the happiness he now enjoys, all the more remarkable, admirable, and truly inspiring. ~ Brian Levant

Blotto Has Humor, Heart, and Is a Story of Redemption

This memoir by Jeff Pohn has humor, heart, and tells a story of redemption. The author is an admitted “bad boy,” harboring feelings of self-loathing, insecurity, and a desire to take revenge on the world. He turns to alcoholism and drug use as an emotional anesthesia; however they do not relieve his pain. He is triggered to change his life when he is called “useless.” This is his “rock-bottom moment.” After this, things finally begin to improve. Although Blotto describes the emotional battle of the author, it is compelling and very funny. The self-deprecating, dark humor will appeal to readers. Pohn is an excellent writer and includes wonderfully bizarre details about his experiences and observations. The book is also more than a memoir: it could also be viewed as a self-help guide for those who look to free themselves from substance abuse. These folks are likely to gain encouragement from Pohn’s journey and feel less alone as they work to end self-destructive behavior. I received an ARC of Blotto. I highly recommend it and give it 5 stars. ~ Charlotte

Ride Through Hell

A riveting story of Jeff’s “ride through hell” and COMING OUT the other side! I Laughed... I cried..and felt every emotion he went through. I found myself cheering for Jeff every time I turned the page! A fantastic read... I highly recommend this book! ~ Wendy Wall

Raw, funny, and moving

Blotto is raw and honest. Funny. Shocking. Moving. The story of the writer's life from a harrowing childhood to a tormented life as an alcoholic to his eventual recovery and the discovery that life can be peaceful, satisfying and "serene". It's a gripping read. A great book not just for addicts, but for anyone who has suffered terribly and found a way out of the dark hole. Congrats to the writer. And hat's off for his courage in being so searingly honest. ~ Christine Gallagher

A fascinating memoir that had to take real guts to write. A must-read for anyone who is struggling with addiction and anyone who loves someone with addiction issues. ~ SlyBoots29

A friend who has been in recovery many years told me about “Blotto.” He knows that like the author I also had a harrowing childhood. This memoir shows the value the AA program offers to people who have become lost in the world of addiction. I think the bigger lesson offered is the resilience of the human spirit to overcome adversity and thrive. The odds were stacked against the author based on genetics and environment, but he chose to do the work necessary to have a successful life. He demonstrates through his self-awareness that by facing head on what doesn’t work, you can change the outcome of your life and live it in a much better fashion. He doesn’t recommend self-awareness — he displays it with the non-emotional judgements he passes on his own behavior that doesn’t work. He relays these assessments with such sharp yet poignant humor that the read feels more funny than educational. But by the end it is clear he hasn’t remained a victim of circumstances and it inspires the reader to see you don’t have to either. I would recommend this book for anyone who has had harsh life challenges or wants to understand more about people who have. ~ Alan Brotea

Genuine, harrowing and cringe worthy at times... ultimately lovingly redemptive.  Amazing human roller coaster ride. I couldn't put it down, read it straight through oblivious of time. Bravo Jeff!! ~ Steven Blutter

A funny, sensitive and redemptive story of young drunk and how he finds happiness.

Blotto is a funny, sad, heartbreaking and ultimately redemptive true story of a boy who never really had a chance to be a boy. Growing up with an alcoholic father who was rarely present (even when present) and a high society-mother who loved him, but was more concerned about appearances than feelings causes the writer to bury his feelings in booze, drugs and FEET.

Jeff Pohn’s book takes you on quite a ride. There is something so honest and simple as he takes you on his journey from hopeless drunk to his ultimate wake-up call which leads him down the path to sobriety with the help of a 12 step program and and the guidance of his sponsor, friends and relatives.

The 12 step program is put forth so simply with examples of how it worked for him and others. His writing takes on an almost conversational tone which makes it sound so simple, but the subtext of what he is writing says so much more. ~ Andrew Horowitz

WOW! A fast, beautiful, liberating, and relieving read.

You take us round the circle in humorous and lilting style with breathtaking honesty.

So very, very generous. ~ Michael Pink
